I started writing Cuban Heel two days ago having wrestled with the storyline for the past couple of weeks. Without wishing to get into the detail of the plot, there is a revolution that I am finding quite a challenge to put into words. And it’s not THAT revolution–there were turbulent times in the country before Castro demanded change.
What I didn’t realise until I researched the country was that it was one of the most prosperous in the world in, say, 1952 and the fertilizer hit the air conditioning later on. The other thing I knew little of was the extent to which US organized crime was involved in foreign investments to the country. That said, my sole knowledge of the history of the country comes from watching Godfather Part 2, so not the greatest guide in the world, albeit one of the best gangster films ever made.
