Okay, so this is a quick update of what I’ve been up to in the last week or so.
First, I went to see the film ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ for the umpteenth time, a musical tale of a Jewish family facing pogrom’s and patriarchy in the depths of Mother Russia. With some cracking good tunes. After I’d dried the shed tears at the end of the movie, I thought how I had set up Alex Cohen and his family to be the logical consequences of a group of people fleeing their erstwhile home for a new land, which may or may not contain opportunity.
Fast forward a few days and I have been circling round a decision: which prequel story to write about Alex Cohen – one covering Alex’s family’s flight to the US or an episode in Sarah’s life. And the winner is… probably Alex in the short term. I am inevitably not going to let go of the Sarah idea, but my current plan is to situate Alex in a village in the Ukraine and watch his last few days in the country. Once it is ready for release, I’ll let you know where to get hold of it. We are talking weeks not months, although that is definitely not days. These things take time to cook.
